Romare Bearden's short-lived but influential group of artists known collectively as Spiral was an important stepping stone for many black artists during the civil rights era. We are delighted to be offering 17 works from the collection of Dr. Laura Hines, former wife of Spiral member Felrath Hines (1918-1993), including multiple works by the artist and several by his colleagues Norman Wilfred Lewis, Richard Mayhew, and Charles Wilbert White. The 1849 Greek Revival home made from giant granite slabs has been the subject of photographs by Walker Evans and was for a time the residence of P.T. Barnum. Among the offerings from its holdings is an English Astronomical lantern clock by Payne and Co., London ($6,000-8,000), several fine American primitive paintings, a 'Jupe' radial action extension dining table, and a large 17th Century English school sporting painting ($4,000-6,000)
